Chartophylax

Chartophylax
A church or monastic archivist, responsible for official documents, letters, and other records. The secular counterpart was the chartoularios (q.v.). Alexios I Komnenos (q.v.) supported the right of the chartophylax of Hagia Sophia (q.v.) to preside over the patriarchal synod of Constantinople (qq.v.) in the patriarch's absence, something Patriarch Nicholas III Grammatikos (q.v.) opposed as an infringement of his own power. John XI Bekkos (q.v.) was a chartophylax before becoming patriarch under Michael VIII (qq.v.).
